The Southern Fulton High School Class of 2016 recently took a field trip to the Antietam battleground, courtesy of Mellott Company. The school and its students often benefit from the company’s philosophy of life-long learning. Sponsoring field trips for the local students is one way for the company to encourage students to know more about their region. The Antietam field trip has become an annual event for the past few years. The students are guided by dedicated narrators at the battle field. The narrators show how many factors like terrain and martial strategy converged to make the Battle of Antietam a struggle of epic proportions, leaving  23,000 casualties on the battlefield.

The student started their tour in the battlefield welcoming center, where they watched an informative video presentation and view artifacts from the period, such as guns and primitive surgical tools. The tour continued with visits to key locations of the battle field, including The Cornfield, Bloody Lane, and Burnside Bridge. Despite unseasonably hot weather, the students listened intently to the narrative of the intense battle for the Nation’s future.

Following the fieldtrip, the seniors enjoyed a hearty lunch at Golden Corral near the Valley Mall, in Hagerstown, MD.
